Crowded with top-level salons, Tokyo has become a fierce battlefield among 12 areas in Japan and abroad. Among them, the Grand Prix was acquired by bianca Aimi Iwabuchi. She learned her skills as a member of a group of hair designers who dominate the industry, and finally shone as the top of the Tokyo area. This time, it was the fourth challenge for DA. The Grand Prix conveyed the serious thoughts of Ms. Iwabuchi, such as the story of how she challenged working with the long-hair style, which is considered difficult.

Ⅰ. Efforts to area competition

-- Last year, you participated in the Grand Prix Final as a supporting member of Iwata, who worked in the same salon, so is this your first time competing here on your own?

No, this is my fourth time. The first time was before I started working as a stylist. The second time, I was able to get the designer's award, but last year I did not get anything.

--So you participated since when you were an assistant! Was it your salon's policy for an assistant to join the contest?

Instead of the salon's policy, it was my initiative to participate in the contest. Actually, there is a rule in bianca to "bring a good model without compromising" in order to participate in the contest. If you could find a good model before the deadline, you can participate for sure without worrying about assistants or stylists.

-- Why did you feel that you wanted to participate in the contest?

Compared to other contests, DA needs long preparations before I could face my work. Taking photos, deciding models, choosing fashion, creating designs. Through its long preparatory period, I was able to improve myself by developing my techniques. Because there are parts that cannot be obtained from salon works, I naturally felt challenged and wanted to do it.

--This time, the feeling of wanting to do this led you to win the Grand Prix. What has changed from what the previous attempts?

I decided " never to make any compromises" and I looked for a model from very early this year. I was able to meet my current model as soon as possible, and I thought that I wanted her to be a model by all means. However, her hair was super long, down to the waist. She said that it was OK to cut her hair up to her chest, but she wouldn't let me to cut it short. Since I wouldn't be able to participate in a contest that requires a short hair cut, I kept looking for another model after that.

--But you finally decided to use the current model, right?

I was initially worried to compete in DA with a long-haired model, but I decided to just go on with it. Anyways, I knew I found the right model! I searched around, but I couldn't find a more suitable model, so I asked her anyways.

Ⅱ. Efforts to area competition

-- Can you tell us the theme and image of each panels from A to C?

I made my work by thinking about how to express the personality of the model from the style. The model that I worked with this time has her own character. She was very mature for a sixteen-year-old, and she knew what she wanted to do. She gave me the impression of a mature girl. Panel A expresses her inner strength through the dynamic movement of her long hair.

-- How about Panel B?

This panel expresses a dynamic feeling and speeding impression, such as the strength of feelings that move forward beyond her current self. I wanted to express the feeling of running with the blurred area of the picture. That's why her hair looks cranky like an animal, very dynamic. Since it became too strong only with that element, I balanced it by adding the femininity through the piercing and the softness of her costume material.

-- For the "REALITIVE DESIGN" of Panel C, how did it express the word "REALTIVE"?

It looks natural, but there is strength in it and it has this extremely edgy feel. It is REALITIVE that there is a part that make you feel that person's personality .

-- What kind of impression did you want to convey from the C panel?

In Panel C, when considering about the multiplication of a long and short hairstyles, I decided to show a movement of hair that can only be seen in a long hair and the hair tips that can only be seen in a short hair. The hair around the face and at the top shows a movement unique to short hair, and the hem makes the best use of the length to the Wolf style. I made her hair carefully to show her qualities. To make it easier to understand the contrast of the feeling that it is colored and the moving feeling, I put it in a design with change.

Ⅲ. Becoming an area representative

--So finally you won the Grand Prix because of your brilliant work. What did you feel when you took the Grand Prix?

First of all, it was unbelievable, like hearing someone else's story... When I went to the back of the stage, Mr. Nakai and Mr. Iwata's saw me shivering. Finally, I realized that I actually got the Grand Prix, and I started crying. But actually, more than feeling happy, I felt that "I have to practice as soon as possible I have to fix my mind". I felt the time and passion of the people who had even better career than me, those who were challenged by DA many times, I felt the heavy responsibility of holding the trophy.

-- How are you planning to tackle it for the future?

Using some of my holidays, I am now practicing hair cutting intensively. Anyway, I had the desire to improve my skill while I got advice from my seniors. I feel pain if I cannot do what I want to express. So I am trying hard and practicing every day.

-- Last year, you participated as a supporting staff member for Iwata, you did not win at the final but now I believe that the regretful feeling has gone away, right?

I can still cry when I think about last year. I have learned from people who won many contests, and I think I was able to reflect what I have learned from them this time. Also, I did it to make my model as beautiful as possible. I guess that was it (P)

IV. Try to join DA

-- Did the idea " REALITIVE " come from salon work?

In the Kamakura area in Kanagawa Prefecture, where our salon is located, I feel that there are more people who are seeking "high quality" haircuts. Such styles normally do not need too much maintenance and the hairstyle that can be natural is usually preferred. Even when making such designs, the techniques and skills cultivated in the process of making works in contests will survive. Instead of directly connecting each part of the design, it will be reflected on the materials that you use. (P)

-- I think that, in this era, some people have a negative impression in participating in a contest, but please tell me why you continue challenging yourself in a contest like this.

My seniors in bianca have their own "colors" (characters) in each of their work, so I also wanted to have my own "character"! I think that it is better for a hairdresser to have his/her own color. But at the beginning, I did not even know what I liked and what I wanted to make.

-- So you were able to find your own "color" when you saw your creation in the contest, right?

When I worked on my creation, I thought, "What do I like?"By keep on thinking and refining it, I could actually see my own "colors". If I did not participate in the contest, I might just be doing hairdressing as a job. I think that those who can talk about the things that they like are charming, and since they "like" something, they can convey their passion to others. I want to keep in mind the glittering feeling that I felt at that time.

-- I am looking forward to seeing your work that reflects that glittering feeling at the final stage! Thank you very much.
