It was not easy, and amazing, indeed, to win the champion in Fukuoka area while being easy teaching in many seminars, participating in a huge number of contests and salon work. Karen Yatomi is always good at expressing clear originality in designs while working on many different tasks. She is said to be good at prioritizing. This time, we have an exclusive interview to touch on the way she worked for the contest.

Ⅰ.The preparation work before the DA area contest

--You have won the design award in the Photo Revolution last year. So why not photo but a challenge on DA this time?

I have see the champion finals in DA last year. And, the award presentation ceremony was at that time as well. he quality in DA was really high, and I just dreamt of reaching the level of these elites.

--Which particular parts that you thought "cool"?

There were nothing especially "made to win the contest", "I want to go home with that" if I were the model. They were the perfect fusion of the originality of the stylists and the models, and that's the Realitive.

--So you could feel the "Realitive" from the work. So, after you have made up your mind to join the competition, what did you actually create?

First thing first, whether the style suits the models is very important to me. Not to make too much but just a "suitable" one. Basically, I think and decide everything by myself. Sometimes, I just ask the make-up artist "how's it?" and seek for some opinions, that's it.

--So, you are the type who sink in your worldviews.

Exactly. I can't do anything without having the goal in my mind so I always start by planning the whole process in my head. This time, I had the style of model C in my mind first, from there I created the A and B panels.

--You started from C and worked backward. What was the most difficult part?

Since all the models are working for multiple contests at the same time, it was very tiring to think of the balance. I have to confirm with them how much hair I can cut, and of course, I needed to check their hair. Creating with these concerns was, I think, the most difficult part.

Ⅱ.About the works

--Could you share something about your work?

I want to show femininity in panel A indeed. The details of the curls represent femininity, and they show elegance too. Panel B is, maybe, something wild. There were quite a lot of bold cutting in the style but I didn't plan all the details in advance for this one. I want to be expressive here and thus not very much plans.

--What about C? What's in it?

The model is very cute and girly, she has a baby face and I want to make use of this element. I understand that curl is a must here but I want to do something more exciting and added some shaving, some highlights, some accents on it. But of course, I still worked on the girly element.

--Maybe I can say, you are trying to make your style work while still bear in mind to make something to suit the models. What do you regard as your own Yatomi signature?

I have never thought of it. Whenever I tried to make something nice for the models, they turned out as something like my own preference. While when I look the styles at the end, I think I did find myself in it but I didn't try to work out my way right from the beginning. But I think I like to show and emphasize on femininity and elegance under a bit of chaos.

Ⅲ.Becoming the representative of the area

--You beautifully matched up your preferences with the models and become the champion in the area. How did you feel when you know that you were selected?

I was shocked...it was my first try and there were so many experienced candidates so I was like "me?". I was more shocked than happy. I was so stiff on stage and couldn't say a word.

-- I think I could fsense your anxiety at that time. [laughter] So what are you doing for the final now?

After the contest, I went to one of the judges, Mr. Difino Dobashi (Hayato Dobashi) and asked for his personal advice, as I received the design award in the last year's Photo Revolution. There I was told "let's spend some more effort to work on the details of the cuts". Hence, I tried my best to be more detailed in the cut and be more expressive in those details. Besides, I tried to widen my own horizon by looking at those I was not interested in. I tried to study more, and widen my design scope.

--Do you want to become the DA of the year in the competition this time?

Sure. I am receiving tremendous support not only from my own salon but other stylists I came to know in photo shooting and study groups. I don't want to disappoint them so I really want to work out something great.

Ⅳ.Trial Participations in DA.

--I think you are undergoing a lot of changes in this process since your participation. Are these changes reflected in your work in your salon?

Well, in Fukuoka area at where my salon is located, instead of being diverse and individualistic, people try to stay together, they prefer looking the same as others. But still, when I upload the photos in Instagram or something, I received comments from them saying "that's cool!" Then, I tried to suggest something new for those ones like " do you want to me to cut your bangs shorter?" or " do you want to challenge like a short hair style?" I think I am becoming bold in my suggestion.

--That's a good chemistry then.

Of course, in a salon, you can't go too far but I believe that stylists enjoy creating and thus, competitions are enjoyable in this sense. It's so great to have my clients looking at those side of my career indeed.

-- I really wish you could be the DA of the year and have good news for your backers in your area!
